When you’re buying a chainsaw, you need to make sure you’re buying one that’s right for you.
If you don’t, you might end up with a saw that’s difficult for you to use, or doesn’t cut quite as well as you want it to. So, before you order your new chainsaw, it’s wise to do a little bit of research.
Two of the most popular brands are Milwaukee and DeWalt. Neither of them is bad chainsaws; however, which one works best for you is not a one-size-fits-all answer.
This article, PowerOfTool.com focuses on the best chainsaw from each company. From Milwaukee, we have the M18 fuel. And from DeWalt, we have the Flexvolt 60v max brushless chainsaw.
Before we can talk about the differences between these two saws, we should start with what they have in common.
First, they both have auto-lube. Lubrication is an essential part of a chainsaw as, without it, the saw could become too stiff to work with and could even become a safety hazard.
However, despite it being important, lubrication is a huge inconvenience as it requires stopping work in order to apply the lube. So having a chainsaw that does it automatically means that you can be guaranteed a high-functioning saw without the extra effort and work interruptions.
Both saws also have a brushless motor, although only one has it in the name. A brushless motor is the most effective as it ensures that the chains are able to run at maximum speed, and with little to no chance of the motor breaking.
And finally, both saws have a 16″ bar. This is a good length as it means that the saw can easily cut through any tree you are likely to need to cut, whilst still being small enough the make the saw easy to hold.
There are two main efficiency criteria to keep in mind: how long one charge lasts and how many cuts you get per charge.
In terms of voltage, the DeWalt obliterates the Milwaukee with a whopping 60V maximum (as it brags in its name), whereas the Milwaukee has a measly 18V. That’s three times higher. This means that the DeWalt charge will last much longer, and therefore, that the battery needs to be charged less often.
However, “lasts longer” is not the same as “cuts better”.
The Milwaukee will offer you 150 cuts per charge, making it, in theory, one of the most efficient chainsaws on the market. The DeWalt will only give you 70 cuts per charge. But there’s a catch!
On the companies’ websites, the DeWalt states that it gives you 70 cuts per charge, on pine wood, whereas the Milwaukee doesn’t specify what the 150 cuts would be cutting through. For all you know, it could be 150 cuts through small branches, which wouldn’t be very good at all. But I very much doubt that’s the case.
The winner of this round is difficult to measure, as the DeWalt gives you a higher voltage, whereas the Milwaukee probably gives you more cuts per charge. So, I think we should call it a tie.
Chainsaws are dangerous machines, and an accident involving one could take away a life. So safety is not something to take lightly.
The first thing that you don’t want to happen when you’re sawing is for the chain to come off. This happens sometimes when it has not been properly secured, which is why you should always wear a hard hat and eye protection. Thankfully the DeWalt chainsaw has tool-free chain tensioners. This means that you don’t need to worry about making sure the chain doesn’t fly off: saw does it for you.
The Milwaukee, on the other hand, has some other useful safety features, including a speed control so if you don’t need to cut on full power, you don’t have to. Just turn down the speed to something you’re more comfortable with. This will be ideal for cutting smaller trees or branches.
It also uses Redlink+ technology. Redlink+ is the type of technology that you would expect to find in a computer rather than a chainsaw, but it makes using it much easier. Thanks to this technology, you can sure your chainsaw will not become overheated, and that the brakes will always work.
This round has a clear winner: the Milwaukee definitely takes the crown.
Power is, without a doubt, one of the most important things to look for when you’re buying a chainsaw. If you don’t have enough power, then you won’t be able to cut the wood that you need to cut.
Both of these chainsaws do have plenty of power, so neither of them will disappoint you. But which one will impress you the most?
There’s no point in even pretending this is a fair fight. The DeWalt gives you 3 Amphours, whereas the Milwaukee gives you 12.
And the overall winner is…The Milwaukee. It’s a brilliant chainsaw that’s full of power, has more than enough safety features, and is extremely efficient.
In terms of pricing, the Milwaukee is $400 whereas the DeWalt is $330. But it’s probably worth the extra $70 as it is a better saw.
